Claustrophobia and You
Gossip As hard as it may be believe, UCSD actually does have folklore that isn't invented on the spot by jaded campus tour-guides. (Did you know that the library is sinking? Really! They told me that during my orientation, so it must be true!) Construction during the first few decades of the university's life, for example, took place both above and below ground. These underground tunnels, running mostly underneath the western portion of campus, have occasionally been violated by students unable to find anything more goddamn worthwhile to do with their time than to be inevitably disciplined for trespassing on dangerous and private property. Publicly available documentation on student forays seems to end during the mid 1990s. Everything published more recently just refers back to the older information, a vicious cycle of which I'm proud to be a part of. Today, the minor sense of adventure isn’t worth the effort there have been scattered reports of students bypassing rusted locks only to be rapidly tracked down by authorities. Very angry authorities. Sources maintain that the tunnels are now riddled with unavoidable motion detectors linked to the UCSD police department as well as the Physical Plant, not to mention the scattered and gnawed skeletons of those foolhardy enough to brave the unknown denizens of the underground. The tunnels might not be worth the effort anymore, but it’s comforting to know that might be something disturbing and unique happening below the tons of concrete and dirt.
