Save the Co-ops!
News

coops.jpgUCSD's co-ops are in immediate danger of losing their spaces on campus, according to a pamphlet made available at the Food Co-op and the General Store in the Old Student Center. The co-ops, which include the above establishments, plus Groundwork Books and the Ché Cafe Collective, have been embroiled since last spring in on-again off-again talks with UCSD Student Affairs regarding tenency in the spaces.

Now, with the co-ops officially off-lease, Student Affairs has notified the organizations that they will be asked to vacate their spaces if an agreement cannot be reached by Friday, Oct. 15th. Student Affairs currently refuses to negotiate regarding the terms of the lease. It is unclear at this point whether negotiations will re-start before that date.

This is a big deal, both in terms of students' rights, and because of the essential services that the co-ops provide, such as not ripping you the hell off for food, books, and entertainment. Seriously, compare the Food Co-op's prices for soups and sandwiches to the (A.S.-run) Grove Cafe's. Do YOU want to be locked into paying upwards of $8 for lunch after October?

The co-ops are requesting that students push the issue to Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. The Chancellor's Chat is unfortunately over, but her office can be reached at 858-534-3135, or via e-mail at chancellor@ucsd.edu.
