Give us your blood!
Anecdotes

I passed by the blood drive the other day, and it's unfortunate how much UCSD students seem to not give a shit – I'm well aware that the idea of having your blood drained from your body is unnerving for many, but you can always make more of it for fuck's sake. It's not like goddamn oil, although that would make for a more interesting world. Imagine it, massive pools of ancient blood buried beneath the sands of the Middle East and Texas, having to pump type-O into your tricked out Civic, and massive blood spills off the coast of Alaska.

Personally, I think the blood drive volunteers need a more proactive approach. Just get a big ol' burly motherfucker to chase down and pin random students while technicians forcibly extract the blood from the first vein they find. Any complaints would be baseless. I'm sure we signed some sort of clause when accepting enrollment here that'll allow it, and now that the police can get our DNA whenever they want, I'm sure the school can too.

I tend to agree, in the general sense, that people oughta give blood. However, I've been rather hesitant to do so, because last time I tried they punctured an artery instead of a vein. The attendant basically didn't know what to do and called over a real nurse. She claimed this had never happened before, and they had to look up the procedure in a binder, and I think I had to sign some form. After the artery puncture they gave up on getting more blood from me. Which is probably a good thing because the process isn't enjoyable, except for the free food at the end and the t-shirt.
And the time I went in before that I passed out...which makes sense because I had just woke up, was still tired, and basically hadn't eaten anything.
Not to say that you shouldn't give blood...the blood banks are desparately low...when they say you're saving a life they're not joking...but do like they say and eat/drink first. And hope that you have veins that are easy to find...but not too easy (like mine.).
