Fear and Loathing in America
News
Thompson's passing is unexpected. Despite years of recreational drug use, he was not an addict. And while his lifestyle revolved around destruction, it was always without malice, and usually wrapped in direct, vicious commentary against American popular culture and the Republican party. Strange, then, that Thompson seems now to have been one of the most admired men in America. Thompson was a regular guest on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, right-wing blogger Matt Drudge routinely linked to his columns, and he met with John Kerry during the 2004 presidential campaign. Antagonistic as he was, he was also irresistable. Some might say that this was because Thompson was hilarious, inimitable, and never really joking. I say it was because he was truly great. We are a weaker nation without Hunter S. Thompson.
