Sixth College Gets Atkinson-isized
News

Lame-sounding Sixth College is set to be given a real live name, just like the big kids. Unfortunately, the currently favored namesake - Atkinson, after former UC president Richard Atkinson - isn't much of an improvement.

A little bird wrote in with details about the behind-the-scenes machinations; the full text is after the jump.

For the past two or three years, a group of UC alumni have been trying to name a building after former UC president and UCSD Chancellor Richard Atkinson. Sixth College administrators have been looking to name the college since before it had students, around the same amount of time.

Rather than name a building after him at UC Merced, which I feel is a more fitting tribute, the tribute group has succeeded in pressuring Sixth to name itself after the former president. With the pressure of its first graduation coming up, the provost and chief technology advisor want to name it before the inaugural class gets their degrees.

In the interest of opening things up to the public, the feedback email we were given, to respond by Monday, is feedback@sixth.ucsd.edu. For more information on Atkinson, see rca.ucsd.edu.

Obviously, it's unsettling that students, even student council, was only consulted at the end of the process, as it's my understanding the naming is set to go before the Regents at this month's meeting. As for Atkinson himself, while I'm sure the Cognitive Science department is indebted to him, he's not of the caliber of the other college namesakes, who have national significance. Students, or at least their college council representatives, deserve a say in this pivotal part of their identity.

not to mention another straight, white man. don't we already have a few colleges named after men? especially when womyn are the MAJORITY— i think they deserve at least 1 more college. and, doesn't the theme of sixth college itself, approved before students were here (http://www-senate.ucsd.edu/Sixth/theme.htm) also commit the college to diversity.

not to tokenize… but, come on, is finding a queer womyn of color who exemplifies a theme of "culture, art, and technology" really that hard?

Atkins Atkinson College...just great. Who better to represent the fusion of culture, art, and technology than a guy who has nothing to do with it? PURE GENIUS.

Yeah, sure. Sixth will be named after Atkinson right after it gets named after Ronald Reagan. Remember that fuss about 6 months ago? I hear a few poor, misinformed freshmen actually lost sleep over it!

The original author would do well to check her facts a bit more carefully. By which I mean at all. Spend a few minutes with Gabriele or Pat and you'll see they are not people to be "pressured" into anything.

For more bullshit in this line, with a hint of panicked confusion among the students, check out the Sixth College forums:

(N.B. That thread began March 6th, and this article was posted March 7th. Did "Satan's Homegirl" base the story on that thread with a bit more editorializing?)

anyone can be pressured… and this is a much more real possibility, given the people involved and given the love of Atkinson by ceratin white CA liberals.

i'm surprised there was another leak… though, obviously, the poster who posted to this forum put a lot more thought into it. but i think it shows that multiple people on sixth college student council might be against this. really, it makes it more likely that this is true.

I wasn't trying to say there was another leak, I was trying to say the leaks are one and the same.

But it turns out the naming process is indeed underway. I stand totally corrected.

But seriously, if we get named Atkinson, I'm switching to Warren. Just like Moby left the country in 2000.
