RIAA Sues I2Hub Users, Including UCSD Students
Follow-Ups

Yeah, apparently what I said earlier is no longer true. Students from UCSD are among the list of poor saps that are about to be sued thanks to their massive filesharing. If you want to read the Wired Magazine article on it, take a gander here. Be ready for those lawsuit letters tomorrow!

Update: Here is some more in-depth coverage keeping track of the latest I2Hub news (thanks Nom).

YOUCSD.COM HAS POLITICAL CAPITAL NOW, AND WE'RE GOING TO SPEND IT
Follow-Ups, News

For just over one month now, I've been happily sitting on the knowledge that YouCSD.com is in the clear with university officials. There exists no good explanation why I haven't announced this sooner, but I'm going to casually mention my crippling priapism as a possible candidate.

Ann Parode, the legal attack dog who first came nipping at our heels, emailed me after several weeks of silence to bury the hatchet as incompletely as any good lawyer knows how.

... So, as long as your content remains as mindless as it was last time I went there, and the Library image is off of the site such that there is no likelihood that anyone would consider your site to be an official UCSD site or otherwise endorsed, I plan to take no further action on this matter....

To make a point, let me repeat some of what she said with a bit of my own inflection. "As long as your content remains as mindless as it was last time I went there ... such that there is no likelihood that anyone would consider your site to be an official UCSD site..." Do you SEE that?! That, my friends, is a mandate to swear. Ann, I hope we make you proud.

So, fuckin' shit, we're staying put. Suck our dicks. Lick our assholes. Keep reading our goddamn blog. Now fuck off.

ERC Suicide Update
Follow-Ups, News

A couple of readers forwarded us this letter:

Dear Eleanor Roosevelt Students,

We are deeply saddened to inform you that a fellow ERC student, Christina "Chi" Cho, a second year resident student, passed away on campus Sunday evening. Christina's family has requested that their privacy be respected and sensitivity extended in the announcement of her passing.

To all of you who knew Christina, we extend our sincere condolences and recognize that this is a loss particularly for you but also for the entire ERC and UCSD community. Christina's family has provided the College with information regarding the viewing service scheduled for Thursday evening in Los Angeles for those of her close friends who would like to attend. You may contact the ERC Dean of Student Affairs Office to obtain this information at 534-2237.

A death of someone so young is always a tragedy and saddens us all. If any student would like to speak with a counselor regarding the impact of Christina's death in their life, we encourage you to contact Psychological & Counseling Services, 534-3755; ERC Academic Advising, 534-9864; ERC Dean of Student Affairs Office, 534-2237 or the ERC Residence Life Office, 534-2261.

We also encourage you to provide Christina's family with your support as they mourn her passing and celebrate her life.

Sincerely,
Patricia L. Scott
Dean of Student Affairs
Eleanor Roosevelt College

Additionally, a source has come forward claiming reliable information that Christina's suicide was not motivated by the stress of school but instead by the death of her boyfriend in a car accident mere days earlier. If this is true, it would invalidate my previous commentary about learning to stop and smell the roses despite UCSD's crushing course loads. Even so, my suggestions still hold true for the rest of you.

Rest in peace, Christina.

Anecdotes, Follow-Ups

With more rain comes more damage. Reader Ad Absurdum wrote us with this swell anecdote:

Rain destroys on-campus apartments because they are made of cardboard. No matter how drunk you are, do not let maintenance investigate bubbles in your ceiling by poking them with a screwdriver. Water will gush out, you will need to rush a trashcan underneath it, and the crew will leave a dehumidifier, fan, and gaping hole in your apartment indefinitely. And yes, there are fucking sandbags behind the door. The apartments below are in much worse shape.

Included photos lurk beyond the jump.

Ah, the Memories
Follow-Ups

Apologies to our unwarranted readership for the slothful entry frequency. We've got our hands full trying to update the site's backend; look for new features soon. In the mean time, entertain yourselves with these PDFs of our posters from the first day of class. If I see any of these posted in a dorm window or something I swear I'll nut in my pants.

column.jpgFirstly, I must thank the Guardian for distributing 18,000 copies of our Marye Ann Fox poster on Thursday on top of the original 300 that we sprinkled about campus. I guess it must have been a slow news day. This response is tardy because I spent my Friday and Saturday evenings doing more important stuff than typing things on the internet.

If the Guardian runs any more articles on us I'm going to file a restraining order or ask for a hand job. I haven't decided which yet—groupies can be touchy.

Clarifications and details on Christine Kwon's Thursday article after the jump, along with a note on (our) anonymity.

Crisis in the Co-ops
Follow-Ups, News

YouCSD.com has been informed of an upcoming press conference to be held by the Associated Students and the Graduate Student Association, intended to explain the current co-op situation. From the press advisory –

UCSD THREATENS TO EVICT STUDENT CO-OPS, BANS STUDENT GOVERNMENTS FROM NEGOTIATIONS

The Associated Students and the Graduate Student Association of UCSD have scheduled a public press conference in the North Conference room of the Student Center at UCSD on Monday, October 11, at 1:30 P.M., to explain the situation and current developments regarding threats by UCSD administrators toward the co-ops and student governments.

This is definitely going to be an event to keep an eye on, as up until now we've mostly been privy to second-hand information and speculation. If you're curious, we have a copy of the press release available for download as a 54 KB PDF.

(Also, are you wondering what the holy hell that little "-30-" is doing at the end of the press release? It's a symbol meant to mark the end of some text. There's more explanation about the symbol here – I've been led to believe that "learning" can be "fun," so have at it.)

Thank God for Sugar Daddies
Follow-Ups, News

Some actually good news, if it's true. The Guardian reported today that no state money will be used to pay for Chancellor Fox's $6,500-a-month house. Apparently the university has funds "from a private donation given to [the university] years ago that has been used by the president to address the maintenance of chancellors' residences," UCOP's director of communications Brad Hayward is quoted as saying. Hey, it's still a ridiculous amount of rent, but at least it's not a ridiculous amount that we, and other California taxpayers, are paying for.

And remember how the whole reason Fox is getting the fancy rental property is because University House, her normal digs, was deemed uninhabitable? Well, according to Hayward, the rebuilding of that property will be funded by donations instead of taxpayer funds. Not sure which fat cat would be willing to cough up some cash just to give Fox a bangin' crib, but one is sure to materialize. We can sure hope.

Of course, the invitation to have tea parties on Fox's front lawn still stands.

See our original post about Chancellor Fox's housing here.
